snow day homework

From Friday to Saturday, I finished reading two books for my graduate class:

General Lee’s Army: From Victory to Collapse

An excellent historical work. It was a huge  improvement over the ponderous Lee’s Lieutenants. While at times Glatthaar skips confusingly around the timeline, he makes up for it with a clear, concise, exciting history of the Army of Northern Virginia. The reader never tires, because the author not only looks at military movements and tactics, but also the psychology of the Confederate soldier.

I also read Masters of Small Worlds: Yeoman Households, Gender Relations, and the Political Culture of the Antebellum South Carolina Low Country.

To be fair, parts of this book offered fascinating insights into the causes of the Civil War. However, the book spirals into feminist diatribe a few too many times for my taste.
