Innocence & Instinct

Red

Two days ago, I finally received Red’s much-anticipated (by me!) second album, Innocence & Instinct. It leaves behind the themes of broken and shattered man from the first album to probe heavily dualistic tension between fallen human nature and our higher calling to innocence. There are so many paradoxes in man: the desire to be alone vs. the the need for people, ultimate happiness vs. absolute moral exhaustion bordering on despair. But as the lyrics remind the listener, even when about to enter the valley of shadows, God is there. Cry out to him in your brokenness and fear, and He will walk with you to bring you back to innocence. One is also reminded of the bigger picture. We may not understand why we suffer in this life, but all will be clear in the next.

CD Cover

The track listing is as follows (on the deluxe edition, which I bought and highly recommend over the other…the deluxe edition is relatively upbeat):

  1. Intro (Canto III)
  2. Fight Inside
  3. Death of Me
  4. Mystery of You
  5. Start Again
  6. Never be the Same
  7. Confession (What’s Inside My Head)
  8. Shadows
  9. Ordinary World
  10. Out From Under
  11. Take It All Away
  12. Overtake You
  13. Forever
  14. Nothing and Everything

A excellent review and detailed description of the story behind each track can be found here at BandsOnFire.Think about ordering a copy of the CD…it is well on its way to being my new favorite album.
