What is Steampunk?

October 27, 2008 § 1 Comment

In case you hadn’t realized, steampunk is about to be very mainstream. Although the trend began as a genre of fantasy fiction, heavily influenced by the Victorian era and the Industrial Revolution, steampunk has since become a subculture of its own and is moving in to fashion, art, music, etc.  Fashion-wise, you will see a lot of gears – as in watch gears – and metal. As a girl who is forever trying to get the pulse on the latest trends, I am fascinated by this movement and excited to spice up my look with a few pieces if I work up the courage. It doesn’t hurt to incorporate the trends a little bit: the most important element of fashion (I believe) is surprise. Don’t overdo it, but an accessory or two can add interest.

Here are a few offerings from Etsy.com that I think are quite tasteful…for the very daring.

For more information on the rise of steampunk, you can read this article here.  Probably the best introduction to the steampunk genre in fiction is The Prestige, found here on Amazon in book and film form. (The film is rather violent but I can certainly recommend the book…one of my favorites.)
